Climate Analysis and Climate Change in Giresun

Speaker
Prof. Dr. Ahmet Apaydın
May 10, 2024
14:00
Rectorate, Martyr Ömer Halisdemir Conference Hall

Prof. Dr. Ahmet Apaydın presented a detailed climate analysis prepared with sensitive data obtained from new meteorological stations established in Giresun in recent years. Apaydın examined Giresun by dividing it into three different climate zones: "Coastal strip," "Coastal-facing inland region," and "Kelkit basin." He noted that unlike old and sparse station data, new data reveals local precipitation and temperature differences more clearly. Analyses emphasized that while annual precipitation in the coastal region has not decreased, it has become irregular, and air and sea water temperatures have significantly increased in the last 25-30 years. Specifically, data showed that the average snow height decreased from 36 cm to 26 cm and the number of severe precipitation events increased. These findings were interpreted as important climate change indicators pointing to warming in the north and a trend of aridification accompanying warming in the southern Kelkit basin.

R&D, Technology and National Development

Speaker
Dr. Atakan Peker
December 17, 2018
14:00
Giresun University, Faculty of Engineering, Harezmi Amphitheater

In this seminar given by Dr. Atakan Peker, the process of transforming scientific research into technological products and the critical role of this process in national development were discussed. In his presentation, Peker detailed the "valley of death" concept, stating that this concept represents the challenging transition process between scientific knowledge production and the commercialization of this knowledge into a technological product. It was pointed out that although Turkey competes with developed countries in the number of scientific publications, it remains below the world average in patent applications and technological product output. With the determination "We produce scientifically but cannot transfer it to technology," the differences between innovation and invention were revealed. Peker emphasized that the key to countries' economic independence and development lies in the transferability of R&D activities from the laboratory to the industry and explained the strategic importance of technological production.
